“New Girl” S7E5 Recap: Stay At Home Dad Nick tries to prove his worth as a godparent with an ant-coated teddy bear.

Jess might have another job to add to her resume — godmother. Winston and Aly ask her if she’d be interested, especially since the other contenders just aren’t that great (sorry, Nick.)

Her first mission? Go to a lamaze class when Aly can’t. And knowing Jess, she gets a little dramatic with all of it. After chatting about the fact that Winston is going to be a father in days, Winston admits that he’s a little timid about fatherhood. And while in the class, he accidentally knocked the head off a baby doll, so hopefully he won’t do the same with his upcoming child.

Godfather Material

As for Schmidt, he’s aiming to head back to work. He promised himself he would after Ruth turned a certain age, so it’s about time. Speaking of Ruth, Nick gifts her a giant bear with ants coming out of it, since, best uncle ever. He’s aiming for the position of godfather, which in his eyes, is a lot of fun.

Winston admits to Jess that every time he thinks about his baby, he thinks to his dad, who neglected him. Does he have a small group of white friends like Winston does? He’s not really interested in looking him up, but. It might very well be time.

Jess tells Winston that, uh. His dad is outside. Jess found him by Googling his name, “and here we are.” Winston gets nervous, especially since he doesn’t even know what he looks like. The two hug immediately and seem to instantly hit it off.

Cece calls Nick and confides that yes, she needs help with picking Ruth up from Triangles. Nick rubs it in her face. Cece left her phone at home, and is using a stranger’s phone to call Nick. She needs him to bring both the phone, which has an important gate code on it, and Ruth’s lunch. But Ruth notices Cece’s not around pretty quickly and call Schmidt at his new job, mid-meeting, to pick her up.

Nick prefers bribery in figuring out the gate code. But he looks a lot like a child molestor. Cece meets up with him, but as she also doesn’t have the code (wait, did I miss Nick forgetting the phone?) they both get in trouble.

Well, This Isn’t Good.

Jess, elated that she brought father and son together, meets up with Aly who tells her that… no. The guy hanging with Winston right now, Van Bishop, is 100% not his dad. She’s seen a picture before, and it’s not a match. Uh oh.  Jess confirmed that she showed the “dad” a picture of Winston and he burst into tears, and that was the confirmation she needed.

Back at Triangles, Ruth is finally released to Nick and Cece. He reveals that by mistake, he sat on her sandwich and then decided to eat it. Cece calls him the “human equivalent of the space between two couch cushions” for all this. Schmidt is at Triangles, and starts to freak when Ruth isn’t there. He calls her, but her phone is left at Triangles. Schmidt returns and sees Ruth sad on the couch in sadness due to the sandwich incident. Schmidt offers to make her another, until Cece pulls him aside. “We’re out of peanut butter,” Cece whispers.

Winston realizes Van isn’t his father after he said he’s never been to Chicago. Nervous and singing Van Morrison, Winston slips and breaks the construction of his upcoming baby’s crib, and it was very awkwardly staged.

Jess tries to apologize, with Aly making sure to remind Winston that she has zero detective skills and her heart was in the right place. “For what it’s worth, you are more prepard to be a father than anyone I know. And that includes Schmidt,” she says. Van comes in and says that while he’s not Winston’s real dad, he could fill that role if he needs. “Nah dog, I’m good,” Winston states. “Makes sense,” Van says.

Cece admits to Schmidt that she doesn’t know if she can take care of Ruth every day, while Schmidt admits he wishes he was home full time with Ruth once again. Cece’s cool with it.  Having a stay-at-home dad plot is actual super progressive, so — well done, New Girl.

But another episode will be happening momentarily.
