Pay disparity continues to be an issue in Hollywood, and while #TimesUp and similar movements are making strides in ensuring professional environments including movie and TV sets are safer, fairer places for women, it’s pretty safe to say we’ve got a long way to go. The most recent piece of proof that inequality is still rampant came in the form of the revelation that Matt Smith was paid more than Claire Foy for The Crown‘s first two seasons despite the fact that Foy literally is The Crown.
Left Bank creative director Suzanne Mackie admitted the discrepancy at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem on Tuesday, giving the BS explanation that Smith’s Doctor Who fame earned him a higher paycheck. However, she promised that “going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen.”
Uh, OK.
While this news is far from surprising and definitely not the only case of pay inequality in show business, it beggars belief that in 2018, an actress who literally plays the titular character on a television series still isn’t getting paid as much as a supporting actor. We certainly still have a long way to go.
